  1. Check the weight: Pick the pot up. If it feels suspiciously light, your soil has shrunk away from the sides and the roots are dry.
  2. The “Immersion” method: Instead of just putting it in a saucer, fill a container with room-temperature water. Submerge the pot only halfway up its height.
  3. The 20-minute rule: Let it sit for 20 minutes. Check the top of the soil. If it’s still dry, leave it for another 10 minutes.
  4. The final drain: Once the surface feels damp, remove the pot and let it drain in the sink for at least 15 minutes. Never put a pot back on its saucer while it is still dripping.

Choosing Your Method for Long-Term Success

I generally stick to a hybrid approach. I top-water my chunky-mix aroids once a month to ensure the fertilizer salts are pushed out the bottom, and I use bottom-soaking for my smaller, peat-heavy plants to ensure the roots get a deep drink without drowning the top inch of soil.
