Stop Watering by the Calendar

The most common mistake people make is sticking to a rigid, weekly watering habit. Plants do not care what day of the week it is; they care about how much water is currently in their root zone.

In the summer, when the air is humid and the sun is high, a Monstera might drink a liter of water in five days. In mid-January, with the heater blasting and the sun setting at 4:30 PM, that same plant might sit in soggy soil for three weeks. If you water it on a Tuesday just because it’s “watering day,” you are inviting root rot.

If you have a vent near your plants, your environment is likely fluctuating wildly. Forced air does two things: it dries out the soil surface instantly and it wicks moisture away from the leaves, causing crisp, brown edges on plants like Calatheas or Ferns.

  1. Bottom watering: Place the pot in a bowl of water for 20 minutes. This allows the roots to soak up only what they need without saturating the top inch of soil, which is where the dry air hits first.

  3. Group them: Move your plants closer together. When plants are bunched, they create a small “micro-climate” where the moisture released through their leaves (transpiration) stays trapped between them, effectively raising the humidity for the whole group.

Seasonal Adjustments for Dormancy

Most houseplants are native to tropical regions where the seasons aren’t marked by snow, but by wet and dry periods. In the winter, even if your house is warm, the light intensity is significantly lower. Lower light means the plant photosynthesizes less, which means it consumes less water.

If you notice your plant has stopped pushing out new leaves, it has entered its semi-dormant stage. During this time, you should lean toward underwatering rather than overwatering. It is much easier to save a wilted plant that needs a drink than it is to save a plant with mushy, black roots from over-saturation.

When to Use a Moisture Meter

If you are worried about the center of a deep pot, a moisture meter can be a helpful tool, but don’t treat it as an absolute rule. Most inexpensive meters are calibrated for outdoor garden soil, not the porous, chunky potting mixes we use for houseplants.

Use the meter as a backup, not a primary tool. If the meter says “Dry” but the pot feels heavy, trust the weight of the pot over the needle. If the meter says “Wet” but the plant is wilting, check the drainage hole—it’s possible the soil is compacted and the water is trapped at the bottom, which is a common occurrence in winter months.
