Plant Edema Explained: Why Blistered, Water-Soaked Spots Are Killing Your Foliage

If you’ve ever noticed small, water-soaked bumps or blister-like lesions on the underside of your leaves, you might have initially panicked, thinking you had a pest infestation or a fungal infection. I’ve been there. After inspecting my leaves with a jeweler’s loupe for spider mites and finding nothing, I realized I was looking at edema.

Edema isn’t a disease caused by a bug or a virus. Instead, it is a physiological reaction to a hydration imbalance. Simply put, your plant is taking in water through its roots faster than it can transpire (or release) that moisture through its leaves. The internal pressure builds up, the plant cells swell, and eventually, they burst. The result is those unsightly, corky, or translucent spots that often look like tiny blisters.

How to Tell if It’s Edema (And Not Pests)

The biggest giveaway for edema is the texture. If the spots are slightly raised, look water-soaked, or feel like tiny, hardened scabs on the underside of the leaves, you are likely dealing with edema. Unlike fungal spots, which often have a yellow halo or a fuzzy center, edema spots are generally dry, crusty, or blister-like.

On plants like Peperomia, Pilea, or even thick-leaved succulents, these spots can eventually turn a rust-brown color once the burst cell tissue dies and dries out. If you scratch the spot and it doesn’t leave a hole or smear like a soft rot would, it’s almost certainly old edema damage. The damage is permanent—those cells have already burst, so they won’t “heal” back to a smooth, green surface. However, you can stop the progression.

Edema is almost always tied to a disconnect between your watering habits and your plant’s environment. Here are the three most common scenarios I see:

How to Fix the Problem

Once I identify edema, I change my strategy immediately. I don’t move the plant to a new spot unless the current location is drafty or entirely stagnant. Instead, I focus on regulating the intake.

Adjust your watering frequency. Instead of waiting for the plant to wilt before watering, aim to water when the top inch or two of soil is dry. You want to avoid the “starve and gorge” cycle. Consistent, moderate watering is the best defense.

Increase airflow. This is the most practical step you can take today. If you have a small desk fan, point it toward your plant collection (not directly on the leaves, just in the general vicinity) for a few hours a day. Better air circulation helps the leaves transpire more efficiently, preventing that internal pressure buildup.

Check your soil drainage. If you are using a dense, heavy potting mix that stays wet for weeks, the roots are constantly sitting in a hyper-hydrated state. Try repotting into a mix with more perlite, orchid bark, or pumice. A faster-draining mix ensures the roots aren’t soaking up water every single time the soil is damp.

What to Do With the Ugly Leaves

Since edema damage is permanent, you have two choices. If the spots are minor and the leaf is still largely healthy and photosynthetic, leave it alone. The plant is still using that leaf to generate energy.

If the leaf is heavily disfigured or unsightly, you can prune it off. Just remember that if you remove too many leaves at once, you’re reducing the plant’s ability to transpire, which can actually exacerbate the problem for the remaining leaves. Take off only the worst offenders and monitor the new growth. If your care adjustments are working, the new leaves should emerge smooth and clear.

Once you’ve stabilized the environment, the most important thing is to watch the new growth patterns. If the new leaves are coming out healthy, you’ve solved the puzzle. If you’re still seeing spots, it’s time to take a closer look at your watering schedule and the specific moisture levels in your potting mix. Addressing the root cause now will ensure your plant stays healthy as it continues to grow in your home.
