The Drainage Dilemma: How Pot Material and Hole Size Dictate Your Watering Frequency

When I first started keeping houseplants, I treated every plant as if it lived in the same environment. I used generic plastic nursery pots for everything and stuck to a strict Saturday morning watering schedule. Predictably, I ended up with a graveyard of root rot on one side of the room and crispy, dehydrated ferns on the other.

I eventually learned that the “drainage dilemma” isn’t just about having a hole in the bottom of your pot. It’s about the interaction between the physical material of the container and how quickly moisture can actually escape the soil profile. If you want to stop guessing when to water, you have to start paying attention to the physics of your pots.

The Porous Factor: Terracotta vs. Plastic

The biggest mistake beginners make is treating terracotta and plastic as interchangeable. They aren’t.

Terracotta (unglazed clay) is a living, breathing material. Because it is porous, it allows moisture to evaporate not just from the surface of the soil, but through the walls of the pot itself. If you plant a thirsty Pothos in terracotta, you will find yourself watering it twice as often as you would if it were in a glazed ceramic or plastic pot.

I use terracotta exclusively for plants that hate “wet feet,” like succulents, cacti, or snake plants. The clay wicks excess moisture away from the roots, creating a buffer if I accidentally overwater. On the other hand, if I have a tropical plant that prefers consistent moisture, like a Peace Lily or a Calathea, I steer clear of terracotta. In those pots, the soil dries out way too fast for those plants to stay happy.

The Hole Size Myth

We’ve all heard the advice: “make sure your pot has drainage.” But not all drainage holes are created equal.

A single, tiny pinprick hole in a massive 12-inch pot is often effectively useless. Drainage isn’t just about letting water out; it’s about airflow. When you water a plant, you’re flushing out stale air and replacing it with oxygen-rich fresh air. If your drainage hole is too small, the water creates a vacuum effect. It sits at the bottom of the pot, unable to move through the soil because there isn’t enough air exchange to let the water escape.

Here is my rule of thumb for drainage holes:

If you don’t feel like DIY-ing a hole, use the “nursery pot method.” Keep your plant in the thin, plastic liner it came in—which usually has excellent drainage—and simply set that inside your decorative, non-draining outer pot. When you water, take the plastic liner to the sink, let it drain completely for ten minutes, and then put it back.

Recognizing the “Perched Water Table”

If you’ve ever noticed that the top of your soil is bone dry but the bottom of the pot is still a murky swamp, you are dealing with a perched water table. This happens because gravity can only pull water down so far before the physical surface tension of the water inside the soil pores becomes stronger than gravity.

The taller and narrower your pot, the more dramatic this effect is. A deep, skinny pot will almost always have a layer of saturated soil at the bottom, even if the top feels dry. If you are using tall decorative planters, fill the bottom three inches with leca or large chunks of pine bark. This raises the “floor” of your soil, effectively shortening the depth of the column and preventing that bottom layer from staying permanently sodden.

Putting It Into Practice

If you aren’t sure how your current pots are performing, try this simple test over the next week. Lift each of your plants right after you water them to feel their “wet weight.” Then, lift them again three days later.

If your plastic-potted plants still feel heavy, your soil mix might be too dense, or your drainage holes are clogged. If your terracotta-potted plants feel light as a feather by day two, you’re likely underwatering relative to the pot’s evaporation rate. Once you start observing the relationship between the weight of the pot and the type of material it’s made of, you’ll stop relying on calendars and start watering based on the actual needs of the plant.
